AMELIA, VA (WWBT) - All schools in Amelia County will be closed for one week starting next Monday. The announcement came late Friday night in the wake of this week's swine flu death and high absentee rate.

Starting Monday, all four schools in Amelia County will close for cleaning. In a case like this that involves the flu, the CDC recommends the closure lasts five days. Amelia County parents received an instant alert about the school closings.

After reviewing attendance data from the last three weeks and consulting with the Virginia Department of Education, the superintendent decided to close all four schools in the district for one week.

The closure begins Monday, October 26th and will last through Friday, the 30th.

"The recent high absentee rate had a negative impact on instruction in all of our schools so it's our hope by closing the school system the spread of the germs and the illness and concerns over the flu will be greatly reduced," said Assistant Superintendent, Patrizia Humphrey.

The decision comes two days after six year old Heaven Wilson, a first grader at Amelia Elementary, died from swine flu. Roughly three hundred students did not attend school Friday following the tragic news. A third of those students were said to have flu like symptoms.

"While schools are closed all buildings and busses will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected we urge parents to continue to practice good hygiene at home and to use good judgement when exposing children to the general population."

School staff also received an instant alert. They were told to come in Monday to pick up any belongings they might need.  Parents with any questions should call the School Board office Monday morning at 561-2621.
