HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A dislodged battery in their smoke detector is what firefighters found when they arrived at this deadly Henrico County house fire. Whether it was working or not is still in question but it was enough to cause neighbors to think twice about their own.
"I checked mine on Saturday," said next door neighbor, Marvin Jefferson. "But I checked it again today to make sure everything was properly."
Jefferson and his children were shocked to find out the family they see almost everyday is gone. For them this tragic event sends a message.
"Make sure you have not just checked it when you think you need it but make sure you check it just like you check your filters in your house," said Jefferson. "You got to check it on a regular basis."
Fire officials determined that the smoke detector fell off the wall due to the amount of heat in the home. That likely caused the battery to fall out. Nonetheless, they still caution all residents to make sure their smoke detectors are in good working condition.
"Take the message and look at your smoke detectors," said Henrico County Fire Department captain, Chris Buhren. "Look at your escape routes from your home so you can get out safely in the event of a fire."
Neighbors have placed stuffed animals and flowers on the steps of the home in memory of the 3 lives lost. The father was not home when the fire broke out. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
