CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -For some stores, plywood is taking the place of glass. Police say vandals shattered the clear stuff in order to make entry into several businesses over the weekend.
An ABC store, a Subway and Dominos, Kulture, and three Chinese restaurants: Fortune Bowl, Chang Sheng and China Wong, they're all relatively close and now have something in common. Sometime on Saturday they were vandalized. Police say things were stolen from a few stores but aren't releasing details.
"Thank God that our store was not hit," said Regina Thompson of New York Bakery and Deli.
Thompson is relieved, but still uneasy. The deli where she works is just two doors down from two of the crime scenes.
"I feel scared. Basically right now, I really feel scared of things that are going on right here now," she said.
Down Hull Street Road Ashley Bonaparte is more angry than scared.
"They took our pest control box and bashed in the front window," said Ashley Bonaparte of Steak and Cheese Restaurant.
She's talking about Kulture. A store employee who couldn't talk on camera told us this is the second time in recent months the store's been hit. The first time crooks took off with items. But this time a heavy-duty security system scared them off after they broke the glass.
"I think the economy has a lot to do with it. People are getting desperate. I think it's a shame," Ashley said.
As investigators collected rocks like one from the businesses, Ashley is thankful for the restaurant's boosted security.
"Steak & Cheese has cameras. We have a security system," she said.
Still she's worried these crimes may be a sign of things to come.
"I live around here. A lot of people I work with live around here. It's Hull Street. It's not supposed to be somewhere people are targeting us," said Ashley.
