Dogs, cats receive discounted rabies vaccinations

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - If you missed this weekend's rabies clinic, you still have a chance to get your pets vaccinated.

Henrico county police gave the rabies vaccine this weekend to hundreds of pet owners.

Animal control says the human vaccine is in short supply, so the best way to protect yourself is to protect your pets.

"It's important to make sure you have all your pets vaccinated," said Lt. Shawn Sears of the Henrico County police department. "It's also state law. It's a class four misdemeanor for failing to do so. Any dog or cat four months of age or older is required to have a rabies vaccine."

That misdemeanor carries a $250 fine.

The event is this Saturday in Hanover County at the West Hanover Rescue Squad building on Beaverdam Road.

The clinic runs from 9 a.m. until noon.   Each shot costs $7. Hanover county has had 24 rabies incidents this year.

Animal control reports the county is on pace to exceed last year's total of 26.
