RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - It's becoming much easier for police to catch crooks these days. especially those that rob local businesses.

Just this past Monday, in Hopewell, a burglar broke into Hopewell Pawn and Loan shop. Before the suspect could get too far, however, Hopewell police caught him. A security system listened to his every move inside.

"It makes me feel good about my alarm company and the police because they are both doing their jobs," said store owner, Alec Shull.

According to data from the Richmond Police Department, commercial burglaries are down this year. By this time in 2008 there were 70 commercial burglaries reported. In 2009 only 54. That's a 23 percent decrease. Security companies like Sonitrol are proud to assist local authorities in catching those crooks.

"With our type of technology we are able to listen in to a facility so whenever there is anything that does occur, whether they break a window through a wall through a roof, whatever might happen at that point we can listen in and determine what that is," said William Kiley

As crime fighting technology helps put bad guys behind bars, some are thinking twice before breaking the law keeping incident numbers low.
