Crane operator killed at Smith Mountain Lake

FRANKLIN COUNTY, VA (WWBT) - Crews plan to pull a crane out of Smith Mountain Lake today after the machine fell of a barge and killed the operator.

The accident happened about 11:30 yesterday morning. The crane operator, 54-year-old Roger Goad, was replacing a dock in the Blackwater section of the lake.

Thats when the crane flipped off the barge, taking Goad with it. It sunk 60 feet to the bottom of the lake.

It took divers more than two hours to recover his body. The visibility was only two to three feet.

His family says he couldn't swim and believes it to be nothing more than an a tragic accident.

Investigators are still trying to figure out exactly how the crane flipped off the barge.

Crews will be back out later this morning to try to get the nearly 10-ton crane out of the water.
