NBC12 Viewpoint: Hospital Hospitality House

By Don Richards, NBC12 Regional Vice President and General Manager

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Our excellent hospitals in Richmond attract patients from across the country and around the world. When these patients arrive for surgery or other critical care they also have to cope with the stress of being in an unfamiliar city.

The family of the patient must deal with finding an affordable and convenient place to stay. This just adds to the pressure for these visitors to Richmond.

For 25 years the Hospital Hospitality House has been a destination for patients and families who come to Richmond for medical care.

It's located just a short distance from the VCU Health Systems downtown campus. The House hosts hundreds of visitors each week in a modern and comfortable facility. Guests have private rooms and complete access to a full-service kitchen, laundry, dining room, library and recreation area.

The House even has dedicated floors for transplant and pediatric patients. Some patients and families stay for a few nights while others stay for weeks. Remarkably the only room cost for these patients and families is a suggested donation of $10 per person each night.

Local businesses and individuals, including me, donate the rest of the money, supplies and volunteer time to operate the non-profit Hospital Hospitality House.  You can learn more about this home away from home for patients and their families by visiting their website, linked at right.
