CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - In these tough economic times no one is safe. Thieves are stooping to new lows to score some extra cash.
"I got a phone call that woke me up at around 3 o'clock in the morning that around 2:30 somebody had broken in to our thrift store," said New Youth For Life executive administrator, Rosalinda Rivera.
New Life For Youth is a charity and thrift store that reaches out to men and women in need of help in the Chesterfield area. She was surprised to find that someone would take advantage of an non-profit organization.
"The fact that if they had a need and they could have walked in this charity, this charity would have helped them and taken care of them," added Rivera.
The crooks came in and took a donation box. But according to store policy they don't keep any money inside the store so they made off with just under 50 bucks.
The thieves tore off the building's vinyl siding and broke through insulation to get inside. Boards have been placed over the hole in the wall. Oddly enough none of the computers or other electronics were taken. Rivera has plans to step up security inside the store. She's thankful the thief didn't take anything that would greatly affect the charity's ability to serve the community.
