RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - We are following breaking news out of Richmond where school leaders have suspended an 8-year-old for bringing a gun to school.

It happened today at Westover Hills Elementary in Richmond on Jahnke Road in South Richmond.

A teacher found the unloaded 22-caliber pistol after two other students said the child had a gun in his backpack.

The school said the student was released to the custody of his guardian and will remain suspended pending a complete investigation.

A school representative says the little boy told other students that he had the weapon. Those students told a teacher -- that teacher checked and found the gun.

Right now it's unclear why the boy had the gun or where it came from. We spoke with a woman who has a 10 year old gradaughter who attends Westover Hills.

Richmond police is investigating the origin of the gun -- a representative with the department said the weapon possibly came from a negligent adult family member.

The school system is reminding parents to keep their firearms locked up and out of the reach of children.
