HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Henrico police say Animal Protection received a call for a sick raccoon that had been shot in the 8400 block of Battlefield Park Road in Varina on Monday at 6:30 p.m.

When the officer arrived at the scene witnesses advised that they had witnessed a raccoon in their yard that appeared to be sick.  The witness shot the raccoon and put it in a plastic bag.

The raccoon was tested due to the carcass being handled.  Positive test results for rabies were received from the State Lab Wednesday.

The health department was notified and will be contacting the witness to determine medical treatment.  There are no other known exposures at this time.  This is the 14th confirmed rabies case in Henrico County for 2009.

Please keep in mind if you decide to handle an animal carcass, please use rubber gloves or a plastic bag to prevent any accidental exposure to rabies.
