Aging water pipeline work to close shoulder on south Powhite

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A traffic alert out of Richmond, where the right hand lane of the Powhite Parkway Southbound between Douglasdale Road and just north of the James River Bridge, will be closed for most of the day on Monday.

One by one, the solid white barriers will soon line the shoulder on part of the Powhite Parkway.

Until then, there may be a slight inconvenience: the right lane closure. But, that will open back up around 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon. Yet, the barriers will stay until May of next year, as the right shoulder will be closed.

The closure will be needed, as construction workers will repair and replace a major water pipeline underground.

The price tag for this work is about $15 million. This is just Phase 1 in a three-phase project for the pipeline. The total project is expected to be completed by early 2013.

The pipeline contains drinking water that goes from a water treatment plant to the Byrd Park pumping station and a reserve pumping station.

Despite the work, you will not have to do anything different to your water during the project and service won't be interrupted.
