PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Like clockwork Creola Boyd is used to getting a real estate tax bill the first week in September. But almost mid-way into the month the bill hasn't turned up in her box.
"When it comes I just say oh well here it is. It's usually on time and because it's not going to be on time so I'm surprised," said Boyd.
The city says the hold up, in part, due to problems finalizing property values.
"This year the city had a complete reassessment. Because of economic times, not just here in the city but everywhere, there were a lot of appeals and reviews which took a lot of extra staff time and so this just threw the process off a bit," said Joanne Williams, Petersburg City Spokesperson.
What's also been thrown off is the due date for payment.
Here's the breakdown.
- With approval from city council real estate tax bills will be mailed out on September 18.
- Payment will be due on October 16th. Instead of the usual September 30th due date.
"Each council has been polled individually and they say individually they will approve it," said Williams.
Boyd says she doesn't mind the delay since it comes with an extension for payment.
"Well that helps a little bit. That means I have more time to pay it so this extension it helps. So that's a good thing," Williams said.
City council is expected to approve that September 18th mail out date and October 16th payment date next week.
