RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -  Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell says he has tempered beliefs since he wrote his graduate thesis in 1989.

That thesis has raised eye-brows recently because it says that governments should protect heterosexual, two-parent families from feminists, "cohabitators and fornicators."

McDonnell dismissed the paper as "an academic exercise" from long ago and said he no longer believes much of what he wrote then.

Dan Palazzolo, political professor for the University of Richmond, Joined NBC12 to talk about how the issue could affect the race for Virginia Governor.
