CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Chesterfield police say the man who barricaded himself in his Midlothian apartment and fired upon Chesterfield County Police SWAT team members last night has died.

Police said Brett M. Rivers, 36, of the 500 block of Kerri Cove Court, died shortly before 2:30 a.m. today at VCU Medical Center.

Police initially responded to the Park at Salisbury apartment complex shortly after 6 p.m. Monday evening after Rivers brandished a firearm at a complex employee, returned to his apartment and fired shots from inside.

Officers immediately evacuated apartment residents and began negotiations with Rivers. Rivers exited his home after two and a half hours of negotiations and fired several shots at SWAT team members who then shot and wounded Rivers.

Police continue their investigation into this incident. A SWAT team officer has been placed on administrative duty as part of standard procedure pending the outcome of the investigation.
