PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - A local agency is digging deep into its pockets to help prepare students for the new school year. Visions Family Services in Petersburg is gearing up to host a back to school bash. Dozens of school supplies, gift cards, and other items will be available for free.

These women are working to help ease the financial pinch some parents face when it comes to purchasing back to school supplies.

"We just want to give back because we all live here and we all have to do our part. When we flourish we need to make sure everybody else in the community comes on board and get a piece of this pie," said Colethia Turner, Visions Family Services.

Visions Family Services in Petersburg is preparing to hold a back to school drive. School supplies will be handed out and $25 gift cards to area stores will be raffled off.

"We want to do is make sure they are fully equipped to have school supplies and not put all the pressure on the parents and teachers," said Turner.

Some parents say the help is needed now more than ever. Especially since the school system recently announced it would not be able to help parents pay for school uniforms this year.

"It's the recession and people are having a hard time buying school supplies and clothes," said parent Theresa Coles.

Coles has two children in the Petersburg public school system. She knows the cost to prepare students for a new school year can come with a hefty price tag.

"You have to save now or either do the layaway thing," said Coles.

Coles didn't know about the back to school drive until we told her.

"I think it's a good idea for them to get out and do that," she said.

The back to school drive is open to all students. There will be free food, games, and music. This group says if students have the proper school supplies, they can focus more on getting a good education. Visions Family Services says it hopes to host similar events yearly.

The event will take place at Poplar Lawn Park in Petersburg. It will get underway Saturday at nine in the morning and end at one in the afternoon. The public is invited to attend.
