CAROLINE, VA (WWBT) - Hundreds of people turned out today for the chance to land a job with the State Fair of Virginia.

With the State Fair of Virginia now in Caroline County, this job fair is drawing in potential workers from both Central and Northern Virginia. These job hunters are competing for dozens of available jobs in everything from food service to tent set up and break down.

Ken Burt has sent out more than 150 resumes all over the country. He says standing in line for less than two weeks of work is a reality this job market has forced him to face.

"I'm unemployed like a lot of other people because of the economy and this is an opportunity to earn something anyway even though it's just a temporary job," Burt said.

Melvin Howard learned about this job fair on our newscast and says any money is better than none. He's hoping this job fair will get him through what are right now tough times.

"I've been out of work for 6 months now, and there's not anything around really, so i'm trying to find some work and this looks like a good place to start," Howard said.

Katherine Whitaker says even a short-term job at the fair would be great for her since she only lives a few minutes away from the fairgrounds.
"It's enough to at least be able to pay the bills for a little bit instead of falling further behind than you already are," Whitaker said.

The State Fair of Virginia starts September 24.  Job seekers applying here today will find out in a few weeks whether or not they landed a position.
