HYANNIS PORT, MA - The third longest serving senator in U.S. history has died.

Senator Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts is being remembered today for his decades of public service.

He passed away at his home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts overnight after battling a brain tumor. Senator Kennedy was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2008.

He became the patriarch of what's been called America's royal family - a family both blessed with great fortune and seemingly cursed with tragedy.

At age 75, he appeared to be at the top of his game when he endorsed president Obama - in effect handing the Kennedy torch to a new generation.

Senator Kennedy's death comes in the same month as his sister Eunice Kennedy. She died August 11.

Senator Kennedy was first elected to the senate in 1962. He was 77 years old.
