RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Virginia State Police is asking for the public's assistance in locating 30 year-old Derick Kevin Hewlett, who escaped from state police custody, following a traffic pursuit on Interstate 64.
At 3:09 p.m. on Monday, August 24, 2009, a trooper noticed a 1996 silver Chevy Lumina illegally pull into a crossover off of Interstate 64 near the 173 exit in Goochland County. As the trooper attempted to question the individual, the subject took off onto Interstate 64 eastbound. Once the vehicle could not be located, the pursuit was suspended. A short time later, the vehicle was found after it had crashed into a wooded area along Roundfield Lane in Goochland County.
The driver, Derick Kevin Hewlett, was taken into custody by Virginia State Police. As Hewlett was being processed at the Magistrate's Office in Goochland, he escaped. Virginia State Police, assisted by the Department of Corrections and the Goochland County Sheriff's Office, began a search of the area for Hewlett for several hours Monday evening. Aerial support and K-9 units were brought in to assist. However, Hewlett was not located.
Currently, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Fugitive Apprehension Unit is actively searching for Derick Kevin Hewlett. He is a black male, 6'4" and weighs 210lbs. He has a scar on his chin and right eye. He was last seen wearing a brown and white striped polo shirt with blue jeans and white sneakers. His last known address is in Highland Springs, Virginia.
He is wanted for felony eluding and evading of a law enforcement officer, DUI and escape.
