Rash of thefts at American Family Fitness in Short Pump

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A warning for the next time you head out to the gym: leave anything you don't want stolen at home. This after a rash of thefts at the American Family Fitness in Short Pump.

One woman even had her car stolen during the crime spree. Henrico police say this has been going on for the last six weeks. Additional officers have been put on the case.

The woman who had her car stolen says she's sharing her ordeal to prevent others from having to go through the same frustration.

"Big inconvenience made me feel violated," said Tomorrow Lofton.

She's now paranoid. Lofton says someone stole her boyfriend's gym bag with her car keys from the American Family Fitness in Short Pump on August 16. It was left in an unlocked locker.

Henrico police say in the last six weeks, they've had about a dozen theft cases from the men's locker room at the same gym including three in the last few days.

"People are desperate now desperate times," said Lofton.

Lofton says as she told gym management, she got a sinking feeling.

"I was thinking maybe I should go look for my car," said Lofton.

It wasn't where she left it underneath some security cameras. But instead parked in the nearby mall lot.

"They went through my bag took my cd's," said Lofton.

Lofton says the crooks tried to use her credit card at McDonald's on West Broad near Parham Road but the card was denied. They then tried to use it at a nearby Exxon but the same thing happened. Lofton had already deactivated the credit card. She says her boyfriend learned an important lesson and hopes others will get the message.

"Always secure your stuff anytime don't leave it unattended," said Lofton.

She says her car key is still missing which makes working out somewhat stressful.

"I check my car every fifteen minutes it may be paranoia but hey that's what I'm left to," said Lofton.

Henrico police say they're working with American Family to improve security there. Lofton would like gym staff to frequently check the parking lot for suspicious people. We tried to reach the manager at the gym, but our call was not returned.
