CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - We caught up with Rose Matko today at her restaurant in Chester where Ryan used to work. She says when the guilty verdict was announced, she wasn't quite sure she had heard right, but then quickly realized that after two years, she finally got justice for Ryan.
"I was just overwhelmed with emotions my body was just trembling I felt so many different emotions on so many different levels," Rose said.
Long before King's arrest, Rose Matko says she knew the admitted gang member was her son's killer. Rose says she got Ryan's cell records after his death and saw that King was the last person to speak with Ryan.
Throughout King's trial, prosecutors called those cell records "truth markers" that could back up the testimonial and circumstantial evidence. Rose says not only was she concerned by King's young clean cut appearance but more importantly, the fact that the prosecution could not reveal to the jury King's gang activity. But in the end, Rose says the jury did what was right.
"I think he got what he deserved but I'll never understand why he did what he did. There's certainly no reason for it," she said.
