RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -  Crews are working to determine the cause of an overnight apartment fire in The Fan district that injured two people.

Water to the building has been shut off and will likely remain that way for the better part of the day. All 50 families inside were evacuated.

That fire broke at around two this morning in the 1400 block of Grove Avenue.

It's a much quieter scene right now  -- some of the eight fire crews that responded to the fire have left, others remain inside the building -- working to pinpoint what caused the fire..

The blaze broke out around 2:15 a.m. At 1411 Grove Avenue. Fire officals say when they arrived heavy thick smoke was pouring out one unit on the first floor. Two residents suffered minor smoke inhalation.

We spoke with resident who says she couldnt get out through her front door so she found another way out.

"I heard my fire alarm  and  I tried going out the front door  but we couldn't see more  six inches in front of my face  -- so I ran down the fire escape," said resident Kyrstal Dulles.

Investigators say one apartment suffered the majority of damage. It's unclear when residents will be allowed back inside the building. The Red Cross is assisting displaced families.
