HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A citizen walking along the banks of the James at Osborne Landing in Henrico discovered the body just after 2:30 Friday afternoon. This body was so badly decomposed the rescue team couldn't distinguish if it was a man or a woman.

The citizen immediately called police - who in-turn, called out a river rescue team. Even though it's still too early to tell if foul play was involved, a forensic team was also dispatched. The medical examiner will attempt to determine an ID and cause of death.

Authorities have no reports of a missing person in the Richmond area that would fit the general description - but it's possible the body could have gone in the water much further upstream:

"Based on the decomposition of the body, it's been there for a while, or it's been in the water for a while - so it very well could have floated down to this point," said Henrico Police Department Lt. J.C. Holmes Sr.

The body has been transported to the state medical examiner's office, for autopsy. It's uncertain when the results will be available.
