NBC12 Viewpoint: Community Kitchen Garden

By Don Richards, NBC12 Vice President and General Manager

Here is a terrific example of a community grass roots approach to help meet a growing need. Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden has dedicated land and expertise to create a vegetable garden. It is called the Community Kitchen Garden at Lewis Ginter.

It is dedicated to growing produce for the Central Virginia Foodbank and Meals on Wheels. Summer is always a time of increased need, particularly for nutritional food for children and the elderly.

The gardeners hope to grow 10,000 pounds of fresh produce for the Food bank and Meals on Wheels.  Last week alone volunteers and Lewis Ginter staff harvested 600 pounds of vegetables.

The folks at the Community Kitchen Garden encourage gardeners to plant an extra row in their home garden. They can then bring their produce to Lewis Ginter on Saturdays and Mondays from 9 a.m. until noon. The staff will deliver it to the Foodbank and Meals on Wheels to help reach the 10,000 pound goal.

For more information about how you can help visit them online at LewisGinter.org.
