HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Joe Biden is scheduled to speak at J. Sargeant Reynold's Parham Road campus just before 5 p.m. today.
The vice president will be focusing his comments on the recovery act, which includes everything from environmental issues to health care reform.
He's also expected to highlight the importantance of community colleges across the nation in this economy.
"I think the Obama administration is keying in on the community colleges as going to be the main tool to help get America back on track," said Chancellor Glenn DuBois with Virginia's Community Colleges.
Right now, community colleges across the Commonwealth and the nation are seeing an increase in enrollment.
In this economy, the option is popular because of price coupled with the opportunity to get a degree or perhaps re-career.
Biden is expected to touch on the subject in his speech at later today.
"I think it's a timely visit just given the recent announcement by president obama to invest $12 billion over a decade in community colleges, not just for investments sake but to more degrees in the american economy and in the virignia economy," DuBois said.
White house officials say Biden's speech will focus primarily on highlighting the progress of the recovery act and it's efforts to jumpstart our economy.
It's a direct result of the recession--a crisis unlike any since the great depression, and includes measures to modernize our nation's infrastructure, enhance energy independence and expand educational opportunities--like those at community colleges.
Officials with J. Sargeant say no matter what the vice president chooses to talk about -- they are honored to have him speak on campus.
"I've been here 17 years now and this is the first time we've had a dignitary of this magnitude on either of our three campuses, so this is a really big deal for us," said Malcom Holmes of J. Sargeant Reynolds.
