RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Residents complained about rats, in Gilpin Court and the Public Housing Authority responded, but, not in the way tenants say they should.
Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority did what it said it would. It sent out a crew to inspect and treat for rats. We must warn you, the pictures and comments, may be disturbing to some.
"They came yesterday morning at 7:45," said resident Nakita Lurry.
Nakita Lurry says an exterminator, armed with more poison traps, showed up at her apartment, one day after our report. She says he filled holes and investigated where and how rats were getting inside.
"They came back and plugged it back up. Pest control once again came and put a box here and a box there for the poisoning and that's it. Not enough," Nakita said.
The exterminator also showed her evidence, that rodents are here, and eating the bait. Its evidence, Nakita says she didn't need, as she had bagged her own proof after a neighbor took care of this rat.
"It's not comforting at all, knowing that there's something running through here and if they eat it and drink water, where are they going to die? Are they going to die?" said Nakita. "They told me if I like smell any smells or anything just to call them back and they'll come and get it."
A quick response but, inadequate for Tziah Moreno and her 6 year old son, who vividly remembers his recent encounter with a rat in the toilet.
DIANE: "It was just there in the water?"
TZIAH MORENO: "Uh uh. Just running around. We flushed it eight times, but it wouldn't fit in the hole though. I thought it was going to jump on me or scratch me or try to bite me."
She says RRHA did a better job this time of plugging up holes, but, she still believes the problem warrants a more intense attack.
"They can come spend a night in here and see what me and my children go through," Tziah said.
The Public Housing Authority also inspected and treated a second apartment. They switched out the poison bait traps and searched for holes and plugged them.
