CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Family members of Damion West say he enjoyed working security and that he'd been a guard at the Ivy Walk Apartment complex for several months. Damion is licensed to carry a concealed weapon according to his fiancé. But didn't have his gun with him when he showed up to work - that's because it's an unarmed sight.
Alicia Taylor expected her fiancé, 28 year old Damion West, to be home from work around 4:30 Thursday morning. But he never showed up. Then, Alicia got a call from Damion's mother...
"She said 'He's gone' and I'm like, 'He what?'," Alicia said.
Alicia says it's hard to hold back her tears.
"I'm just trying to figure out how I can explain this to his son. How can I?" she said.
West was found near a retention pond at the apartment complex Thursday morning. He was on duty working as a security guard. His company vehicle was found abandoned near the crime scene.
"I just don't understand why somebody would want to hurt him," Alicia said. "Damion was a real cool person. Laid back, stayed to himself, didn't cause any drama."
Nellie Benton has lived at the complex for almost seven years and says this isn't the first time something like this has happened.
"Several years back, a neighbor was gunned down at his down at his door," Nellie said.
Even so, Benton has always felt safe here, but is now having some doubts.
"For the most part it doesn't matter where you are these days, things will still have a way of finding you, but it's getting a little touchy, testy. A little testy as far as living here," she said.
As for Alicia Taylor she wants answers.
"If anybody knows anything please just tell it. Please! I want to know what happened to him. I want to know all the details. I need to know something, please."
