RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -  The driver of a cement truck that overturned on southbound Interstate 95 was arrested and taken to Richmond City Jail this morning -- charged with a DUI.

State police tell us that the crash happened around 3 this morning.

That's when the driver was attempting to merge onto southbound I-95 from the 5th Street exit ramp -- he lost control of the cement truck...and ended up overturning near the Broad Street exit.

He was carrying the equivilent of about 36 thousand pounds of concrete -- about half of which spilled onto I-95 -- adding to the time it took to clean up the accident scene.

Traffic was backed up for several miles -- and several lanes plus the ramp to Broad Street was closed for several hours. But all lanes of travel were back open by about 6 a.m.

Richmond City crews, VDOT and the State Police all worked together to clear this crash -- which took about three hours.  Traffic is moving smoothly again in the area.

State troopers are hoping people will see this crash as an example of why you shouldn't drink and drive. Because cleary, disaster can happen.
