PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Three men are in jail after a vandalism spree in Petersburg overnight, in which at least 40 vehicles were hit. People were sweeping up broken glass all over the Walnut Hill area of Petersburg Tuesday.

Many residents awoke Tuesday morning to find their car windows had been smashed out. The vandals broke front windshields as well as rear and door windows. The damage spans across several streets in Walnut Hills.

Petersburg police first got the call of shots fired about one o'clock Tuesday morning, but the sound was likely breaking glass. When they arrived, they found only two cars with smashed windows but throughout the night - similar calls continued to come in. In all, 45 parked vehicles were vandalized. For victims - it's a huge inconvenience:

"I'm going to have to put out extra money because the cars are older and we don't have full coverage - so money is going to have to come out of my pocket to have the windows replaced," said Claudette Williams.

Police say these three men - 26 year old Michael Lunsford, 21 year old Kenneth Isley, and 26 year old Lemar Spencer are responsible for the crimes. It's unclear why the men allegedly went on this apparently random vandalism spree.

All three of the suspects are from North Carolina - and were reportedly in Petersburg visiting relatives.
