HANOVER, VA (NBC12) - Route 301 has reopened following a deadly crash Saturday evening.
The road was shut down at Georgetown Road for more than four hours because of a head-on collision.
Police say a van traveling south on 301 swerved into the northbound lane and collided with a pick-up truck.
The van then caught fire.
Two people were inside the van, police say both died at the scene.
Witnesses claim the flames were so intense rescue crews were unable to approach the wreckage.
"They started screaming for everyone to back up because they were afraid the gas tank was going to explode," said witness Sharon McGee. "I was out here when the windows exploded and the tires popped and all. Everyone was running because the area was full of people."
Police say the bodies of the two van occupants were taken to the medical examiners office for identificaiton.
The driver of the pick-up truck was taken to VCU Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
