RICHMOND, VA (NBC12) - Northside children are excited to have a new place to hang out this summer.
Battery Park has officially reopened.
Mayor Dwight Jones was on hand for a ceremonial ribbon cutting Saturday.
Nearly three years ago, Tropical Storm Ernesto virtually destroyed the park.
After years of work and millions of dollars, the park's ten tennis courts have been resurfaced, and two new playgrounds and a basketball court were constructed.
"There is a lot of opportunities for kids to find something to do to get off the streets and to be in a really wholesome atmosphere," said Mayor Dwight Jones. "All of us know this is where Arthur Ashe got his start so who knows what we might produce from a facility like this."
Richmond Public Utilities Department also built a large drainage pipe under the park to prevent future flooding.
