Relatives of slain Henrico woman talk about case

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Relatives of a slain Henrico woman say they're upset the person of interest in the case has been set free. They want to know where the case stands.

Joyce Braxton and her family are shocked after Kayla Armstrong was acquitted Thursday in the alleged assault of Keiona Braxton.

Joyce Braxton wants to know why it's taking so long to bring someone to justice for her daughter's brutal death. She shared with her grandchildren pictures from happier times with her daughter Keiona, when they took a trip to Disney World. Harsher memories returned Thursday when the person of interest in her daughter's death was released from jail.

"I just couldn't believe why would they let her go," said Joyce Braxton.

Kayla Armstrong was found not guilty of three charges including assault stemming from an alleged attack on Braxton. Authorities say it happened during a heated argument between the two women and Armstrong's ex boyfriend.

Four days later on New Year's Eve, authorities were called back to the Crenshaw road apartment for a fire. Braxton's body was found in the burning apartment.

The medical examiner's office told NBC12, Braxton, who was three months pregnant, had been shot twice. Once in the left arm and once in the abdomen. Police and the prosecutor handling the case will only say the investigation is ongoing.

"They keep saying the same thing over and over that they're waiting on DNA to get back and I want to know what's the hold up," said Joyce Braxton.

The victim's nephew wants answers too. Michael Braxton says he and Keiona were close.

"I miss her a lot and it really hurt me the most because a lot of people didn't understand how our connection was," said Michael Braxton.

He says he believes police already had locked up the person responsible for her brutal death.

"I know she had something to do with it I'm 100 percent sure," said Michael Braxton.

Joyce Braxton says on July 3 she would have celebrated her daughter's 27th birthday but instead will hold a private memorial in Keiona's honor.
