Sheriff leads tour of Richmond city jail in redesign efforts

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Sheriff C.T. Woody, Jr. led a tour of the Richmond City Jail for a group of state and city officials on Monday and shared with them the proposed plans for the redesign of the aged facility.

During a two hour visit they visited the male and female housing areas, the mental health unit, and the new "McCovery" Rehabilitation tier. The Sheriff provided an overview of current jail operations and program offerings.  Also discussed was planning and funding options for the new jail facility - to include alternative sentencing programs.

Those in attendance included Senator Janet D. Howell (D-VA), Delegate Beverly J. Sherwood (R-VA), deputy staff director Richard E. Hickman, Jr. (Senate Finance Committee), legislative fiscal analyst Paul Van Lenten, Jr. (General Assembly), associate director Michael Maul (Department of Planning and Budget), budget and policy analyst Richard W. Hall-Sizemore (Department of Planning and Budget), acting CAO Chris Beschler (City of Richmond) and Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones' chief of staff Suzette Denslow.
