PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - A 13-year-old girl is recovering Tuesday night. Police say she was given alcohol then sexually assaulted by a Petersburg man.
Police have made an arrest in the case: Johnathan Moody is 25 years old. He's being charged with aggravated sexual assault, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. In a police report the victim tells an investigator that Moody gave her alcohol while they were playing basketball on the court at Robert E. Lee Elementary School in Petersburg.
Police say at some point the teenager was sexually assaulted by Moody. It's unclear if the assault happened on or off school property.
According to the police report the victim managed to make her way home after the ordeal. She was found intoxicated and unconscious by her mother who then called police.
Residents who live near the school say they're stunned. Steven Young has two young daughters.
"I can't believe it. I know a lot of things happen in this area. It's sad for a child that age, that's why when my kids come over they stay in the house with me," said Young.
Sharanda Scott lives across the street from the school.
"We really have to pay attention to our kids and know where they are at all times. It's an unfortunate occurrence and it's sad. my heart goes out to her and her family," Scott said.
The suspect reportedly tells police a different story about what happened.
A police report says Moody told authorities that the victim was with a group of people and had already been drinking. The police report also says that Moody claims that he took the victim home after her friends left her alone at the court.
The victim was taken to the hospital. Moody is facing a number of years in prison. Police say it's unclear what the relationship is between Moody and the victim. We do know they are not related.
Moody was arraigned Tuesday morning. He's scheduled to be back in court on July 2.
