Swimming pool safety tips

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Safety officials are warning people of all ages to be careful in and around swimming pools.

They say before you or your children dive in, there are some things you should keep in mind.

Most importantly, always keep an eye on swimmers no matter how skilled they are or think they are.

And if your kids want to go in the deep end, you might want to try this safety test first.

"If you think they're good swimmers and they've had swim lessons, it's always a good thing to stand on the side of the pool or get in the pool with them and say swim from one side to the other and if they're not able to do that, they don't need to go where they cannot touch," said Billie Dorsey, lifeguard at Pocahontas State Park.

And while you are actually in the water, it's important to stay hydrated. Drink lots of water, not alcohol or other beverages.
