45 people displaced after apartment fire

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A fire broke out at the Bermuda Run Apartments just before seven Monday night. That complex is on Mangowood Drive, just off Jefferson Davis highway in southern Chesterfield.

About 45 people are displaced because of that fire, but luckily no one was hurt. Fire officials say the call came in as a kitchen fire. We're told a juvenile in the apartment spotted something on the stove on fire and called 911.

Everyone made it out safely, but that one apartment suffered extensive damage. The 11 other apartments had smoke and water damage. As a result, all of the residents must stay somewhere else Monday night.

The Red Cross is helping out, and the apartment managers are putting some of them up in empty apartments. Deborah Sykes drove from Hopewell when she heard her daughter's home was on fire

"Making sure my grand kids and stuff are safe, my daughter was safe and everyone living in the apartment was safe," said Deborah Sykes. "It's material stuff and that we can get back as long as everybody's lives are safe that's all that matters."

Fire officials tell us residents will be out of their apartments until they can determine how much damage was done and if they are safe. Authorities plan to be back on the scene Tuesday to make that determination.
