CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Some help for older adults and adults with disabilities. Senior Connections and Chesterfield County have come together to host a career fair and workshop to get these job seekers back on their feet and on the path to success.
Two workshops just wrapped up. The first focused on searching for a job on the internet and the application process. The second, on the interview itself, skills some of these job seekers say they needed to brush up on.
These job seekers are finding themselves in unfamiliar territory. Many of them searching for a job again, after decades in the same industry, forced out of retirement because of the recession, or simply because they're now having trouble make ends meet.
And as these job seekers are preparing to re-enter in the workforce, some say they need all the help they can get competing in today's tough economy and job market.
Senior Connections and Chesterfield County are hosting this career fair, but gearing it to older adults and adults with disabilities only.
Several companies were on hand to talk about current and future job opportunities, workshops provided coaching and assistance with job searching, applications, and interview preparations, all to make the transition "back" into the working world easier.
Job seeker, Beverly VanDyke says, "I worry because I'm older now, my company would hire me back, but there's nothing open now, so I know I just have to get out there and push, whether I get part time or full time, but something to help keep me going."
Chesterfield Senior Advocate Debbie Leidheiser says, "A lot of people thought their retirement income would last for the rest of their life, but with the economy and all, that's jut not the case, they have to make the choice, do they buy medication, buy food, a lot of them are having to go back."
Several vendors are here pre-screening for open positions and job seekers can apply on site.
