PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - When you take a close look at the data it reveals which locality in our region is home to the highest crime rate and when certain crimes are more likely to take place.
Overall violent crimes including murder are down statewide. In 2007 there were 411 murders. In 2008, 369. The majority happening inside the victim's home.
Property crimes such as larceny, fraud and stolen property are up. That's according to a newly released report based statewide and local crime figures from 2008
Members of a Petersburg neighborhood watch group are familiar with the report. They were surprised to learn their city ranks number one in the state for the highest crime rate.
"I'd like for it to stop all over. Not just in our neighborhood but everywhere," said resident Rennie Morris.
Carolyn Morris had an attempted break-in at her home.
"They tried to beat the door down. They didn't get in but they did a good job at trying," said Carolyn Morris.
In the report most burglaries in 2008 happened in the month of August. The fewest in the month of February.
Although the report indicates that most of the burglaries occurred between 4 in the afternoon and 6 in the evening.
Lt. Brian Kei says burglaries in Prince George county usually take place earlier in the day.
"People get home between from work between 4 and 6. That's when they reported. Our burglaries are occurring when people are at work," said Lt. Brian Kei.
This Petersburg neighborhood watch group says it knows what to do to reduce crime.
"Just be concerned for people lives and if we get concerned for each other we can keep the bad guys out," said Carolyn Edwards.
And when it comes to motor vehicle thefts most occurred on Friday and Saturday between 10 and 11:59 at night.
