RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Starting Sunday, Virginia State Police will be increasing patrols and radar along Interstates 95 and 81 as part of their traffic safety initiative.
Operation Air, Land and Speed helps promote driver safety with increase police visibility. It ends Monday.
In November 2008, a two-day Operation Air, Land & Speed produced 8,152 summonses and arrests on Interstates 95 and 81. The 177 mile stretch of I-95 resulted in a total of 4,625 summonses and arrests for the specialized enforcement project. Motorists were cited for 165 safety belt violations and 13 felony arrests were made. The summonses and arrests also included the following: 2,053 speeders, 650 reckless drivers, and 21 impaired drivers.
State police will also participate in the "Click It or Ticket" campaign to increase seatbelt use across the state. It runs May 18-31.
