HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Some say the steady march of development along West Broad Street has brought with it new crime.
"It's gradually coming right on down to the outer parts of Richmond now," said resident Cindy Hall.
On Wednesday morning crime came to the Ukrop's on Pump Road in the heart of Short Pump.
"I'm very surprised to hear about it. You just never think about those type of things happening at Ukrops," said Hall.
At 9:00 a.m. police say a man in his 40's walked up to a cashier and handed her a note demanding money. He never displayed a gun and police say he got away with cash.
Gretchen Burgess works next door.
"With the economic downturn the way it's been. People are going to be more desperate. People are going to do things they wouldn't normally do," said Burgess.
This theft comes just after a violent weekend episode. Three days ago a man was shot on the sidewalk outside the new Dave and Busters restaurant in West Broad Village. Police are still looking for a suspect.
"We can't think just because we live in the affluent part of town that we're isolated from the rest of the community. We're still going to be affected by the same crime as the rest of our community,"said Burgess.
Most residents told us crime isn't going to keep them away from all the new stores, but it is going to make them a little more cautious.
Police say the suspect in the Ukrop's robbery was wearing a plaid shirt, blue jeans and wire frame glasses. Anyone with any information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
