HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A Henrico man is facing a charge of first degree murder in the death of his stepfather. But relatives on both sides have differing views of the crime.

There don't appear to be any witnesses to the actual crime. But a day after it happened, relatives of both the suspect and victim see things differently.

It was Tuesday morning, on Old Elko Road. 71-year-old Cecil Colley did not show up for work. And no one answered the phone at his house. So a co-worker went to check on him.

"There was obvious signs of trauma to the torso, the body. Blood present," said Henrico Police Lt. Doug Perry.

An autopsy showed that Colley was stabbed in the neck. Soon after that, 45-year-old Troy Hanvey, the man police say is Colley's stepson, was arrested and charged with first degree murder. And it's hard for relatives to believe.

"I don't think he did it. He's my uncle, and he talks a lot but he's really just a big ol' baby," said Alicia Weedon.

Alicia Weedon is the suspect, Troy Hanvey's, niece. And her late grandmother was once married to Cecil Colley, the victim. Which makes this, all so shocking to her.

"Because my nanny's gone and there was no reason for there to be any kind of contact whatsoever with Cecil. He had no reason to be over there," said Alicia.

She said their relationship was normal. Family get-together's were not uncommon. But a family member on Colley's side, is confident that police have the right man. And now everyone is waiting to see who's right and why this all took place.

"We still got some more work to do on shoring up what the motive is," said Perry.

Not only does Hanvey face the first degree murder charge, he was also booked on felony domestic assault. Police say Hanvey assaulted his son twice, the day before the homicide took place.
