Fire forces patrons to flee hotel

From NBC12 News

CHESTERFIELD, VA (NBC12) - A five-story motel was evacuated because of a fire in Chesterfield Saturday.

It broke out around 3:00 p.m. on the outside of the building.

Apparently, a tarp on the roof caught fire.

No one was hurt, and all of the guests were able to return to the hotel.

Fire officials say fighting flames in a building with multiple stories can be a challenge.

"It is much easier to get inside when you are fighting a fire in a building that is one or two stories high," said Batallion Chief Paul Newton. "When it is up to five stories it is a greater challenge because we need more resources and it takes a while to get up the steps."

Investigators are in the process of attempting to determine a cause.

At this point, they don't suspect arson.
