UPDATE: Arrest made in Highland Springs homicide

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Henrico Police have arrested Brandon Tamon Garlick in connection with the Monday homicide in the 300 block of East Beal Street in Highland Springs.

Garlick was charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.  Police say he shot and killed a pregnant high school student Monday night.

Eighteen year old Wazira Harris was shot following a large fight on the 300 block of east Beal Street. She died after being taken to a nearby hospital. She was a senior at Highland Springs High School. Friends say she was six weeks pregnant.

Tuesday night, neighbors say the crime has ripped away any sense of safety where they live.

"For something like that to happen around here, it's just, unreal," said a resident who didn't want to be identified.

"It doesn't make you feel safe around here," said a neighbor.

When police hear that kind of talk from neighbors who are too scared to be identified, it means there's work to do.

"Their pain is our pain, we don't want something like this to happen," said Henrico Police Lt. Mark Banks.

So, twenty four hours after a deadly shooting they're going door to door. Looking for people who just don't want to be found.

"Maybe they might be involved in things that just occurred before we got there," said Banks.

The shooting was the latest and most serious crime. But a check of police records, reveals that officers have been to east Beal Street six other times this year for crimes including larceny, vandalism and burglary.

They've also responded to three nearby streets for other home break-ins. And two more for things being stolen.

Though nothing in recent memory, quite like Monday night. The renewed police presence is why these neighbors were okay with showing their faces.

"I love it. I really do," said neighbor Heather Burnette. "I think we need a lot more than just like now."

"We really do need it. It's not safe out here for us, we can't even walk out here without bullets flying," said neighbor Marshell King.

It appears the young woman who was killed, was shot by accident in the back. Again, police are still looking for the gunman.
