In the Richmond Area there are more than 5,000 children age 5 and under who live below the poverty level. These children are never taken to a library or a book store during the first five years of their lives. Their parents, care-givers, and pre-school (if they are able to attend one) teachers are not able to buy books for these children. Many of these 5,000 children live in homes without any books; they have never heard a bedtime story read from a book. Food, clothing and shelter are the first priorities in their lives . . . not books. Yet, their brains are hungry for knowledge! Their success in school depends on their exposure to books 5 years before they even enter Kindergarten.

Read Aloud Virginia is meeting the need to fill these hungry minds with words and pictures that will help them to understand the world, use their imaginations, stay in the race for High School Graduation and be prepared for the exciting learning that lies ahead when they enter Kindergarten! Read Aloud Virginia has recently taken over responsibility and management of the Children's Book Bank in Richmond's Main Library on Franklin Street. Through the CBB, thousands of low-income and needy children receive free books to keep in their homes. Thousands of books are distributed from over 150 pre-school programs, both public and private. They are also distributed to under-privileged elementary age students who have no books of their own to read at home.
