New coach Smart promises VCU will 'wreak havoc'

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Shaka Smart says he will build on the success already in place at Virginia Commonwealth University and plans to "take this program to even greater heights."

Smart was introduced Thursday as the Rams' new coach. He replaces Anthony Grant, who also came from Florida to VCU, and left last week for Alabama after three solid seasons.

Smart, 32, was an assistant to Billy Donovan at Florida last season. He also has coached at Clemson, Akron and Dayton, but has never been in charge of his own program.

With the Rams, he inherits a team that has won three consecutive Colonial Athletic Association regular season titles and been to the NCAA tournament twice in three years.
