Education report finds 8.7 percent dropout rate for Va.

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A report released by the Virginia Dept. of Education Tuesday finds that nearly 9 percent of students in the state who entered the ninth grade in 2004 did not graduate with their peers.

Among the statistics in the report:

- 42.2 percent of the students who dropped out were ninth and 10th graders aged 17-years or older.

- Fifty-five percent of dropouts left high school before the 11th grade

- Students with limited English proficiency had the highest dropout rate at 27 percent.
