MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) - Ten of the thirty-two malnourished horses removed from an Isle of Wight farm are getting much needed medical treatment in the Richmond area including two in Mechanicsville.

All of the horses are in poor condition. It'll take about a year and thousands of dollars to bring the horses back to good health.

United States Equine Rescue League has custody of the horses. Two mares are recovering at a rehabilitation farm in Mechanicsville.

One named Ginger is emaciated and on medication to ease the pain of standing and walking.

Another named Sweatpea is also underweight. Her hooves are deformed.

Earlier this month, the horses were being kept at an Isle of Wight farm. The property owners surrendered the animals after authorities were tipped off about a dead horse in a pasture.

A second dead horse was found during the investigation along with dozens of unhealthy golden retrievers.

"From what I understand, these people got overwhelmed," said Susan White with the horse rescue group.

The cost alone says White will run into the thousands for food, vet bills and farrier expenses to repair the damaged hooves. USERL relies solely on donations.

"We need foster homes for these horses in about a month or so and they will be put up for adoption when their rehab is complete," said White.
