DINWIDDIE, VA (WWBT) - Based on the governor's recommended budget, Dinwiddie school leaders say they'll have to cut more jobs and school programs than originally anticipated.

Right now the school district is looking to shave $2.6 million from its budget. That translates to 63 personnel positions being cut along with several school programs.

"The picture that we got at this point is worse case scenario," said Dr. Charles Maranzano, Dinwiddie School Superintendent.

27 teaching positions and 31 support positions are slated to be cut. The school is also looking at eliminating some alternative education programs, including Dinwiddie Academy.

"That means more kids are at risk of either falling behind academically or dropping out due to academic or disciplinary reason," said Maranzano.

Students at the academy would be rolled over to mainstream classes.

Maranzano says the school spending proposal is likely to change again depending on several key factors.

"We have to reconcile the governor's proposed budget with the budget that the Senate and House will reconcile. We got to consider the fact there may be economic stimulus money," said Maranzano.

The new proposed budget will be officially rolled out Tuesday at five during a joint work session meeting at the Dinwiddie County high school cafeteria. The public is encouraged to attend.
