HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Dozens of Henrico residents turned out for a meeting about the county's future. County planners were asking for feedback about the Draft 2026 Comprehensive Plan.

Nearly one hundred people showed up for the meeting at the county administration building Thursday night.

Two minutes wasn't enough time for Nicole Anderson Ellis to get her point across.  For more than a decade, she's called Varina home.

She now worries all the wide open space will be eaten up by development in the coming years.

"We see rezoning signs going up all the time and we stop and we call it's challenging it's exhausting to be on the front lines of urban sprawl," said Anderson Ellis.

As an example, some pointed at the traffic congestion in Short Pump with all the new businesses and homes that have sprouted up.

"What this plan attempts to do is to accommodate a forecasted growth of about twenty years in what we hope is a balanced and responsible manner," said county consultant Greg Dale.

Dale says they want to avoid sprawl and encourage rural preservation. But some don't see it that way.

"Further restriction on development, protecting rural areas, less growth, lower density, this is what your constituants say they want in effect this land use plan does the opposite," says Anderson Ellis.

The planning commission will take the concerns into consideration.  Any further recommendations will be announced at future meetings.
