GOOCHLAND, VA (WWBT) - The James River Correctional Center in Goochland County will close its the main compound April 1, 2011.

The current inmate population is about 450 and the number of employees affected is about 160, according to Larry Traylor, director of communications for the Virginia Department of Corrections.

James River Correctional Center employees were informed late Thursday and DOC employees were informed this morning from Director Harold Clarke, according to Larry Traylor, director of communications for the DOC.

The James River Work Center will remain open and will continue the agribusiness operations at James River.

Statement released by Traylor:

The current Appropriations Act includes a $10.9 million reduction in funding for the Department in fiscal year 2012.  This reduction remains as part of the Governor's introduced budget.  We have evaluated our alternatives to meet this reduction and have determined that the best course of action would be to close the main compound of James River Correctional Center.  The effective date will be April 1, 2011.  James River Work Center will remain open and we will also continue the agribusiness operations at James River.

We will be implementing strategies to maximize the placement of our employees at James River.  This will include holding relevant vacancies which may require the rest of us to help cover for these vacant positions while the placement process proceeds.
