Henrico board to vote on 9/11 monument plan

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - We'll find out this week if a 9/11 memorial will be built in Henrico County.

The board of supervisors will decide on a $2 million project to construct a monument near the intersection of North Parham and East Ridge Roads.

This project is years in the making and includes a large granite monument full of symbolism.

We wanted to give you an inside look at what you'll see, should the board approve the plan.

But Freedom Flag Foundation's Richard Melito hopes this 9/11 monument is grand.

"The main thing is so that we never forget," he said. "The city of Richmond is known as a city of monuments and it's the least that we can do for the victims of 9/11."

Melito has worked with the county to try and bring everyone on board, even the planning director thinks the board of supervisors should give the proposal a thumb's up.

The memorial will go on part county owned property near Regency Square Mall.

"50,000 cars go by the site ever day and if we could just be reminded one time during the day that it was a tragic event," Melito said. "I think it will be very successful."

And if you take a closer look, many parts of that tragic day more than nine years ago are memorialized in this project.

The outside columns stand for the victims who lost their lives in that Pennsylvania Field and at the Pentagon.

The middle columns, the north and south towers of the World Trade Center.

The open space between represents the firefighters, police and rescue workers who responded that day, as well as those still on the job.

The star seen atop the monument, and from an aerial view is for those who fight for the freedom Americans enjoy.

"It is a living monument to those who actively work today," Melito said.

Melito hopes it will become the site of Virginia's annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony.

The monument will cost $2 million dollars.

It will be funded entirely by private donations, no tax dollars will be used.

Melito says they will not start building until all the money is raised.

He hopes the project will be complete by the ten year anniversary of 9/11, which of course is next year.
